[CNC Brute]

Hey guys,

I'm trying to find the rails similar to Thomson Linear Shafting, but the rails I'm looking for are supported the whole length of the shaft. Not just the ends as on the Thomsons.

Also does anyone have some deflection calculations on the Thomson shafting?

Hi Matt,

Thomson makes continuously supported shaft, not just the end supported. All the info you need is available on their website. Here's a link to their linear shaft catalogue. http://www.thomsonindustries.com/PDF...se_Catalog.pdf Other manufacturers of similar shafting are PIC Design, Star-Rexroth, and Nook Industries.

Cool thanks. Unfortunately since I posted I bought Thomson's without supports and some THK rails and bearings.

I do need some more information on the Thomson's though.

So I'm on my way to CNC coolness

Hi Matt,

You can buy the supports without shafts, but you would have to find a good machinist that can drill the case hardened shafts, and you would need open bearings and pillow blocks. You could support the rails on the ends and just use the continuous supports underneath without drilling and fastening the shafts to them. That would solve downward deflection, but not upward or sideways deflection.
