    Candidate for Swiss Turning

If you're using a chucker try going for the finished diameter from stock size, working your way toward the chuck. A collet would help.
Or you could rough & finish a short section at a time, working toward the collet.
If that doesn't work, stick it out say 1/4", rough & finish, stop, stick it out another 1/4", repeat. Keeping the stock indexed to the collet would help (mark it along the length). You need the support of the stock to make this part. Thats why it's a good candidate for Swiss, where the stock is supported right next to the cutting tool by the headstock bushing.
