Looking for post with Photos of 4th axis routed grape cluster

HELP! I am either getting old or just plain senile. A week or so ago I found a post with two or three photos of a table leg that had raised grape clusters cut on it. The leg was still on the axis. I have been unable to find the post again.

Can anyone point me to that post? I am trying to find out how the process works to make the raised pattern on the leg.

    Thank in advance,
    Russ

Thank You Khalid, I have spent a couple of hours trying to find that link. The second one is the one I was looking for. A friend and I bought a Shop Sabre and he wants to be able to do that type of work. I remember seeing the pictures but for the life of me couldn't remember where.

    Thanks again,
    Russ

Khalid, it looks like you are well on your way to having the 4th axis figured out. I am just figuring out the 3 axis operation. Initially I think my friend and I will be using a small wood lathe attached to the router and will be using the cross axis of the router to act as the cnc cutting tool.

You are absolutely correct. In the beginning it will be just lathe work until we can get a real 4th axis up and going.

Not only will I try it, I can produce them 10 at a time. This is a straight-forward example of something that I can duplicate using the current technology that my company employs. Your carving on this vase is very nice, as for not trying it on my CNC, that statement does not apply to me!

    I realize that.

I reproduce hand carved pieces on a daily basis using 3 different CNC Machines.

The vase that you showed can easily be reproduced by our company from just photos. The actual model is better to have, however, a lot of the time, I have to reproduce carvings from photos and drawings. Most often we hit the detail to within .02 inches of the original. We only need to know one fixed measurement on the item and we can scale everything from there. The more info we have the more accurate the reproduction.

Since I draw and sculpt 3D, program the machines and run them as well, I am more in tune to what it takes to reproduce something and develope tool paths to make it happen. Since most CAM programs would want to plunge the cutting bit past Z Axis 0 to reach the surfaces on the other side, I would use a cylindrical parting plane within the vase to keep that from happening.

If I can buy one of those vases from you through eBay for a reasonable price, I will make one for you and video it to post to youtube.com. Some of my work will be showing up shortly.

Thanks for the reply. Talk to you soon.

if your looking for a software for wrapping bitmaps around cylinders then you may want to look at gmax , i havent done any 4 axis cutting with it yet but i have created a number models quite quickly that i was impressed with the quality and ease of use, http://www.turbosquid.com/gmax , if it is of interest to you then i would suggest looking at http://cnc4free.org/ ,Danny has a great tutorial on using the gmax as well as other free softwares that can blow a lot of the pro softwares out of the water , i use the gmax for 3 axis at this point of time for doing 2.5D pictures and stuff but once i do a 4th axis on my system i will be modeling a lot of spindles and such with it

I am launching a new venture called Biker Kickstands.

In addition, if you go to www.polhemus.com and check out the case studies for the Fastscan, you will see some of my work as well. The company I work for, New Wave Woodworking has been in business since the early 90's. The CNC division has been developed primarily by myself and my boss.

Patients to all who ask for photos, my other family demands my time for the holidays!

Here are a few photos of my next project. The scans that I achieve are in my opinion the best in the business today. I have pushed the Polhemus Fastscan to new heights and continue to work with their company. I firmly believe Polhemus to be the best scanner on the market today. I will be generating toolpaths for this owl next week and will post photos to my albums at www.camheads.org.
Some of you may have had the opportunity to see some of my work at Atlanta IWF 2008 this past year. More to follow soon. If you would like to see more, visit my member page at http://www.camheads.org/member.php?u=190
