I believe this technology was being bought/licensensed by Apple for future laptop uses.

Apparently its quite cheap too. I only requires 200 bucks in extra parts more than a video projector. The tech behind it is quite easy to undetstand. http://mrl.nyu.edu/~jhan/ftirsense/

It could give a whole new meaning to the symptoms the mouse or awkward/angled keyboard positioning/heavy typing creates in overuse or carpel tunnel syndrome.. .

I have added to the drawing to hopefully make it easier to understand.

Its one of those things that you ask, "why wasnt it thought of earlier"

It would be fantastic with a 3D program like solidworks etc.
Its just around the corner b4 we will all be using this sort of tech.

    Wow

That would be one of the greatest inventions since the Home Computer. I've worked with Acromatic 2100 controls with touch screens. It's a lot of fun with the exception that it gets dirty fast.

Certainly it provides some advantages over our current interfaces (mouse, pen, keyboard). Detecting multiple touches is certainly nice afterall, but I don't think it is the be-all or end-all interface. For one a keyboard still has some very distinct advantages with precision, so this touch interface is more of a nice complement to a keyboard. Too bad we only have two hands.

I think the more interesting interfaces in the new decade or two will be ones that utilize our eyes (what the user is looking at) and ones that provide a direct interface to the brain. Of course mental interfaces are the cooler of the two, and some work has already been done in this area:

Still, providing more interface options is important, and it is probably going to be a good while before we only need some sort of mental interface. I hadn't seen this touch-interface demo before and it is cool stuff. It certainly allows one some flexibility that is very hard to come by with what we currently have.

ynneb.....I believe that is very similar to what most pressure sensive tablets use....this "new technology" is merely substituting finger pressure for stylus pressure....

I am not sure if what you said was in agreeance with me or not. I did have the advantage of seeing some further diagrams on TV about how it worked. Pressure was not mentioned, and the infrared detection was. Quite possibly you have invented another way of doing it too.

If all computers had these types of screens, the manufacturer of Windex would be ecstatic.
