    Material and Machining questions

I am using eMachineShop software to help me design my first project. The design is almost done but I need to make certain I am selecting the right material and machining process. However, I lack the knowledge about materials and machining processes as this is the first time I have ever done anything like this.

    A. I am making a metal hanger contraption that needs to be very sturdy to hold 20-30lbs of weight. I believe the best material to use is a metal rod of some sort but I don't know material codes. The metal rod diamter/thickness needs to be 0.125" (1/8th inch). Is there a specific code or universal metal codes that are appropriate for what I am looking to use.

    B. In addition, I created the design to be made from appoximately one 24" metal rod, bent in a variety of ways, eventually creating a full loop so the end points can be welded together. What is the best machine process to do this using the above metal rod?

I attached a photo of a hanger that I believe is similar to what I need in terms of material. This is labeled as a "polished brass and it is the thickness and sturdiness I need. This product is also similar in nature to what I am trying to do....one piece rod, bent in a variety of ways, creates a full loop with end points welded together.

    Thank you.

Hi. Welcome to metalworking. You'll have fun.

Bendable metal is not my thing, but if you call a local steel supplier (yellowpages) and ask for a very ductile ("duck-till") metal, they can direct you. Also a local sheet metal shop may help you if you buy the rod there from them with cash. (ductile means bendable without breaking). Steels generally have a four digit number. The numbers indicate something about the properties of the steel.
