Planning on putting some BLDC servo's on X and Y.
This is a fantastic machine. I had a lot of fun building it up.
I kept the stepper on the Z-axis and built a DC power supply to use with a gecko drive.
The BLDC servos are really powerful. It took me a while to tune them up, but it was totally worth it. I've got the rapids set at 300 ipm and the acceleration at 1/2 a g I think.
I put a 5000 line encoder on the x-axis so with a 4mm lead, I get like 127000 counts per rev. I'm looking to replace the y-axis encoder with one of those. Right now it's only 1000 lines.
There is a short video here.

In the video, the tool was chattering really bad because that piece of aluminum was hollow on the backside - just some scrap to tear up.
I'm working on an encoder mount for the spindle because I have one left over from the x-axis and I'd like to do rigid tapping.
We're traveling for the holiday, but I'll post some more pics / video when I get back if you all are interested.
Mike.
