    Mask

    NOt sure if paper mask will work when Im cutting it with my CNC machine?
    I want the stuff they put around cars...plastic that sticks...so when I cut my sign the background gets cut away.
    Paper might work if the whole thing is sticky on the back?

    It's called Spray Mask. Is a vinyl product with adhesive. You get it from Sign Supply companies (i.e SignWarehouse.com) We use it for masking and sand carving glass and for spraypainting signs. You will have to clean and seal the MDF for it to get a solid tack so it will survive routing. May still not work. Another approach is to seal the surface with clear and do the routing and paint the relief cuts, then sand off the surface clear and paint that.

    Tom,
    I'm going to try your method soon.

    abell.. Check out this link. http://www.cnczone.com/forums/showpo...&postcount=187

    First I painted the wood white. Then I covered the wood with kitchen counter shelfliner (sticky plastic contact paper). It cuts ok, and peels great too. After I carved the picture and letters, I painted the border white, then painted the letters red.

    The problem with this shelf liner stuff, is that the router doesn't cut the plastic crisply. The edges on the climb cut side tend to curl. Sometimes it's been a problem. I'm going to continue using this product, but eventually, I'll switch to a better product.

    The plastic is actually clear. In the link it will appear read, as that was the color of my letters.

    I havn't tried this product, lots of Google hits for "Foto/Frisket" http://www.google.com/search?sourcei...Foto%2fFrisket

    I'm not sure how well it works on wood & router bits?

    You could always buy the lower cost sheets on Ebay (link #1), If it works good maybe buy in bulk (link #2).

    8''X11'' = $14.99

    24"x15' = $53.95

    To stop the bleeding use light sandblast mask, it has a mild adhesive that will stop the bleeding, just apply, mill and paint than take off when you are done. If you want the face of the sign one color paint it on first, apply sandblast mask, mill out the letters, than paint the cut out letters, than remove the mask, two color sign nice and easy. Use the same method for sandblasting signs as well.
