Did you install the latest version of guest additions when you installed the latest version of VB? Not really your issues, but I had to do a repair install of VB 5.2.0 to get networking working.

Yes, I did.
I'm about out of ideas. Do you have networking working? You can use dropbox or you can use firefox on the client to download the update from Tormach. Bring up terminal and type 'firefox'
Edit: If it were me, I'd delete the client, uninstall VB, reboot, reinstall VB. I had a fit trying to get networking to work. I think if you can get to the point of upgrading you're still going to have issues since the client cant even see your shares.

Reinstalling. Did you make sure you installed all the other crap (network adapters, etc)? You can also check your services on your host network card to see if VB is listed. I'm using NAT

I accepted all options, but are there special extra downloads in addition to VirtualBox-5.1.30-118389-Win.exe? I specifically was asked about extensions, and I agreed to install them all.Did you make sure you installed all the other crap (network adapters, etc)?
OTOH, I now notice that as part of my earlier installation, I acquired an Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-5.1.28-117968.vbox-extpack in addition to the VirtualBox-5.1.28-117968-Win.exe. This time my only explicit download was VirtualBox-5.1.30-118389-Win.exe
I'm not sure what you are talking about here. Are you talking about VB as seen from Windows as a network presence (it isn't listed), or VB seen from the inside (from PP) as a sort of portal? You can also check your services on your host network card to see if VB is listed.
As I previously indicated, I've looked at all the choices under Devices/Network/Network Settings, and nothing seems to have any effect.
- Under NAT, everything is grayed out
- Under NAT Network, the only option is not selected
- And so on.
The latest version is 5.2 as I noted before. No extra downloads. Just install making sure you install everything it suggests, then mount the guest additions disc and install.
For background: Last week I installed 5.1x. Eariler this week it prompted me to upgrade so I did. This got me to 5.2. I had issues with networking so here's the steps I tool
Re-downloaded 5.2 (the file I downloaded is VirtualBox-5.2.0-118431-Win.exe)
Launched the installer, chose to "repair", installed everything it asked me to.
Rebooted
Launched VB manager
Selected my client and went into settings
Clicked on Network and changed my adapter type to PCnet-FastIII under Advanced ( you need to do this when the client is NOT running)
Clicked Ok
Launched the client
Went to "devices" and selected "insert guest additions", and installed
Cant remember if I restarted after guest additions but networking work after that.
Edit: Here's a video of how I set mine up. This assumes you have installed VB 5.2, created a client and have install PP on the client. There are a few reboots not shown but are necessary. The first reboot is after running the 'sudo usermod' command for the shared folder. The other reboot is after the v1.9.13 upgrade. https://youtu.be/4wq1bqrQEZs

That video was just what I needed. Thank you. Shared files work, so the update worked, and all is well.
Fantastic! I should be getting the 2.0 beta soon. I'll update if there are changes.

So does this mean I'm off the hook now ?
Yeah, VB 5.2 is out and it's always worth while doing the update.
Just download the new version & install over any existing installation.
Make sure you rerun the guest additions installation within your virtual machine.
Also, you can take snapshots of your virtual machine.
Just in case you screw it up trying something new you can fallback to a previous snapshot.
Just a warning: PP is running on an outdated version of Ubuntu that is no longer supported. It is using a very old version of FireFox & other software. I would suggest you keep it away from the internet. I know some people use DropBox and the likes but you run a risk doing so. Learn how to setup local networking then setup your router to block internet access from your PP box using it's MAC address.
Thanks +1!
Does this mean that PP 2.0 is close to release or broad beta or...?
No idea. Someone from Tormach contacted me on FB because of the PP customization I've been working on. They suggested that I participate in the beta. That's all I know.

Now that I have the simulator working (thanks again, @sharmstr), I am thinking about the best ways to keep it and my real PathPilot synchronized. Is there a known way to load & save the Offsets table from & to a file?
Operator/mill_data/tool.tbl is the comma separated file which is your tool table.

Also, I assume that you could use admin settings backup on one instance and admin settings restore on the other instance.
