    Power supply question

I am converting a Bridgeport series 2 Mill that originally had a boss of six control. I intend to to reuse the existing stepper motors connected to 202 drives and a G100 controlled by Mach 3. From what I understand these motors would be much happier running in the 72v range. My question is why is it recommended that you run a nonregulated power supply as opposed to a regulated one?

They tend to be cheape and more robust due to their simplicity and low parts count.

IT is pretty hard to screw up the functioning of a transformer, a diode bridge and a capacitor.

THis is especially true when you're dumping all kinds of inductive feedback (indemic to any DC motor) into a P/S circuit - regulated P/S's don't like voltages being dumped back onto the regulated side of the P/S.
