    probing an angled part

Hey guys, I have a question for those with a probe...

I am making some insert toolholders for my lathe. I am making them
5deg X 5deg. Setting X0Y0Z0 with the probe is interesting because because of the angles the probe slides (in the Z direction) for X and Y I can use a wiggler but any suggestions for finding Z0 with the probe? The angle is 5 degrees on the top of the part.

    Thanks

Probe your vice or fixture anywhere it's flat, then measure from there to a known point on your part using an indicator and the operator screen in hand jog mode. Adjust the Z offset using that number.

Or just probe the part where ever you think you need to, then bring a tool down to Z.01 and dial it down slowly until it touches. Any difference is what you need to adjust the Z offset by.

I know what you're seeing with the probe stylus skidding on the surface, but that's only for the first touch. The second touch shouldn't do it at all, and should be very accurate.

Thanks a lot. You are right, the probe skidded and then I hit reset for fear of breaking the stylis. I will try it again and see what happens after the first touch.
