    Question on Foam

    hey out there.
    I have a couple questions.
First trying to find out what foam is used in case inserts like pelican cases that can be routed on a CNC machine.
Second question anything special to route it.
third, anyone know where you can get the foam in the Toronto area.

    thanks in advance

    Re: Question on Foam

    Hi Rickyg,
Can only help with the machining. I use carbide burrs from air grinders. Cut it very well.
Sorry but I don't know where to get it or what type to get.
Shhh don't tell anyone I get it from work.

    Re: Question on Foam

I think it's called Ethafoam. I've never tried routing it, but I imagine it would be difficult. Maybe a multi-tooth cutter like Alan recommends would have a better chance than an endmill.

Sorry it took such a long time for more info. Tapatalk was not working. Do a search for carbide burrs on Google and look at the images. You should find something cheap local.

    Re: Question on Foam

Hi FoxCNC1, yes I plunged straight down and machined a pocket. I started in the middle and worked outwards. Had a 1/2" cutter, sharp corners. 18,000rpm. Can't remember the feedrate. Experiment a little and see how you go. The burr needs to be in good condition. I found one in the bottom of a draw and tried it but not too successful. Once I bought a new one it work very well.
