    Scanner

Anyone using the Tormach scanner? I have had mine for a while and need to start scanning some parts, but I keep getting the message that my camera distance is too far. When I do get it to actually try to scan, it will not move and never gives an image into the CAD program.

I have used the camera in the past, but mainly just as a scope, not scanning.

I dinked around with the freeware scanner a while back and got that error a lot. Andy G sent me this which might help:

Technically, this means that the minimum length resolution you are trying to achieve (i.e., the smallest feature that you can visually distinguish) is less than the width of one pixel. There are at least three ways to try to remedy this, and you may need to do a combination of all three:

    1. Reduce the working distance between the camera and the object you are scanning. For very detailed scans, I’ve positioned a camera as close as 0.050” above the surface.
    2. Increase the desired resolution in the setup. The default is 0.003”. You may need to increase to .010” or larger.
    3. Use a higher resolution camera. This effectively gives you more pixels over the same area.

I finally got it to scan, but the accuracy is off. 1/4IN shows up as .063 and I realized the camera is showing a resolution of 640 x 480 and I know my scope is higher than that. So may have to play with the scanning some.

I am set at .005 and I am about .5 IN from the part, that is from lens to part. Actually distance to scope hood is probably .1 IN.

Guess I will write Andy a note. But if I can change the camera settings I should be ok.

Is there an option for metric or inches? 1/4" = 6.3mm and you are reading .063???

No it was in inches. I used scale by motion so it should have scaled properly.
