Shipping Motors:Protection In general
A word of advise to those purchasing used servo or other motor of any size from such as Ebay etc, time and again I have received motors of say, over 10lbs, that occur damaged in shipping, I forgot to instruct the last ebay shipper of a 40lb motor to protect the shaft, this is the most vulnerable point.
What I do when shipping motors such as these is to place a tube such as PVC pipe over the shaft and extend past the shaft length,, As invariably the motor gets tossed and lands on the shaft driving it back and either smashing the encoder, or in my latest case, the Tach.
UPS are one of the prime offenders in this practice.
If there is little or no insurance, the only recourse is to try and repair it, apart from the time it takes for shipping companies to process the claim, the further down time of a machine is sometimes crucial.
I have never had a problem with motors I have sold with this protection.
Just a heads up! :tired:
