    Question Machining L168 aluminum

    I need to mill a piece of aluminum graded L168 aircraft grade stuff,3/4" thick. Need chart of SFM for HSS and Carbide tools please.

    I believe it is similar to 2014 aircraft grade aluminum. I would start right around 400sfm-1000sfm depending on cutter and then a chip load sutable for the cutter such as .001 for a 1/8" end mill 900sfm, .003 for a .25 end mill about 600 sfm, .08 for a .75 rougher and 400 sfm. Then just tweek it to your particular machine / and cuttin conditions. You also need to address pockets differently than side milling etc. I would go to the companies web site who makes your tooling and see what they recomend as they are all a little different.
