    Some Mechanical/Resale Questions

I spent the day looking at many many posts and websites and just wanted to ask a few questions.

I saw a method of speed controlling rooftop air handling units at work via two cones you adjust and then found these for go-carts and then discovered the bridgeport J2 motor uses this with a hi/low gearbox for maximum torque in all speeds. I do not know anything about the J2 spindle but I assume the cones are adjusted manually? Does anyone have good pictures of the setup and do any automatic ones exist?

Im saving up for a IH clone and ive read the many R8 vs ISO 30 wars but other than ENCO I cannot find any tool holders for actual sale. Anyone know of some websites?

Saving up for a IH clone/tooling/upgrades is going to take a fair bit of time so I was thinking I could buy a smaller machine now and sell it later. If I had a HF X3 with the cncfusion kit what do you think I could sell it for with the steppers included?? (x3 $1000, cnc premium kit $1000, motors/limits/etc $500 so $2500 new) is it possible to get say $1800 out of it after a year of use??

I know you can get brushed DC servos and was thinking is all a servo spindle just a large HP DC motor with encoder and controller? IF so then could you use a gecko g320x and say a 3HP treadmill motor to replace a spindle and be able to accurately position your tools for things like atc? If not can you please explain why? Also what the heck do you search for on ebay to get these awesome motor/controller combos??? a simple treadmill motor never gives my anything good!

I really like the idea of motion controller PCI cards that can do double closed loop and the PID can be changed on the fly. You get all those lovely tweeking graphs (I love graphs, and tweeking) are their any 'hobby' geared devices out there? Most I have found start at $1000. I figured the G100 and cnc brain are like this but the cnc brain website is down.

I have a garage organizing crisis on my hands, does anyone know of some websites that have examples of how to store all the stuff we seems to collect? Ive been to a few stores in my city and all of the produces where plastic, expensive and couldn't hold any weight. I just need some storage ideas before I start building stuff. (I have 3 feet above my garage door too, anybody use that space somehow?)

Well anyone whos interested please leave me your thoughts, this is probably cross thread but most of the questions are machine related. Thanks!

Ok scrap the entire thread post, I have found most of my answers except the x3 one so:

If I have a lightly used x3 from Harbor Freight with the cncfusion 3axis ballscrew kit nema23 282ozin on x/y and a nema43 640ozin on the z and a gas strut kit what is a reasonable price to sell it at???

You should be able to get at least $2500 for a CNC'ed X3, CNC'ed X2's have gone for $1800 on Ebay.
I'd imagine you'd want to stick to craigs list or similar for local pickup, 500 lbs is a truck shipment.
If you're still looking, Maritool has plenty of toolholders.

Thanks for the reply Hoss, I didnt think I would get $2500 for an cnc'd x3 at all, I guess because its wired up and ready to go people are willing to pay more. I have never sold anything very large on ebay do people actually buy x3's and get them freighted to them or something?

Thanks for Maritool, I have seen them before but they only have R16/32 collet holders but on the upside they are wonderfully concentric and balanced to 30,000rpm

It might be worthwhile emailing Maritools to see if they plan on expanding their range of ISO 30 tool holders.

As for workshop layout, CNC Cookbook has a nice gallery of workshops. You might find some inspiration there: http://www.cnccookbook.com/CCWorkshop.htm

If you are going for an X3 short term you need to think about tooling that is transferable when you upgrade. Why do you want ISO 30 rather than R8? I went from ISO 30 to R8 in an upgrade several years ago. I effectively gave the tooling away in order to sell the mill. It can get expensive real quick.

Yeah they could buy the parts for about the same money but it's alot easier
when someone else does all the work.
Syil America used to sell what you're thinking of for about $4000, new of course.
An X3 on Ebay will probably be tagged for local pickup only, the shipper (you) wouldn't want to deal with the hassle of shipping by truck.
The X2's I've seen sold were disassembled and sent in pieces via UPS.
Craigs list would probably be your best bet.

Well thanks for that little parts rundown, I have my Keling drives but would probably toss in a G540 just to sell it turnkey.

In the quote above are you stating for the $2370 (don't forget to add shipping for all those components) you would sell an assembled and tuned setup brand new for $3000? What would you sell the exact same setup for if it had been used for an hour or two on weekends for a year?

philbur - I was just interested in the price of ISO 30 tooling, with the gap im defiantly sticking to R8 now, its better to just spend the extra change on the TTS

Ha! Ha! I'm not in the business of selling machines. I'm just saying that a quality assembled and tuned machine, even after you use it for a year, would be worth more than the sum of the parts cost. There are other parts needed like motor cables and resistors that will add to that price. Shipping adds cost of course, but prices I gave are minus shipping. $2600 is a reasonable estimate.

If you are going to mix and match other components, performance may suffer and value will decrease.
