4th axis between machines

Hi,
I am new to this forum and I have a question for the experts. I have a MAXnc machine with a 4th axis. I just bought a techno-isel machine and I want to know if it is possible to use the 4th axis from one machine on the new techno. The machines have different posts, the techno has servo motors and the Maxnc has steppers. If it is possible how would you go about doing it. If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it. I really only want to use the 4th axis for indexing, but I want it written into the program so I can mill then index without having to index it manually. Techno wants over $4000 for a 4th axis. What do you guys think.

Simple reply: A stepper driver won't readily run a servo nor will a servo drive/amp run a stepper - totally different drive technologies. There may be some clever souls who can figure out a way but it is not a plug and play deal by any stretch.

Your choices are to change the motor so as to match the drive motor type that the machine control is looking to see or find a 4th axis that is already designed/suited to run with your controller.

Sort of like asking if you can bolt a Chevy starter into a Toyota - they both have/use starters but that's where the similarities and interchangeabilities end.

A basic primer on SERVO drives can be found in the U-102 application note from Unitrode-TI. The same outfit also shows a lot of helpful basic info in the application note for the UC3717 STEPPER driver IC.
