    MDF subwoofer enclosures, 100 run

    Hey guys,

Over on one of the audio forums, we are trying to get a sense for what it would cost to chop up some MDF for flat pack subwoofer enclosures.

AVS Forum - View Single Post - Dimensions for sealed 18" sub box

Not looking for a hard quote, just trying to get a sense for what this might cost to cut the MDF.

    Thanks in advance.

    HI,

I think any wood store will cut these parts for you, they probably make you a deal too on the MDF pricing.

Of course you'll have to pay for the cut but no shipping involve and damaged parts during the shipping...

    Thanks for the reply Jeff.

What I am really looking for though is what, roughly, it would cost to cut up the panels and braces for such an enclosure on a CNC in batches of about 100 units.

    Regards,

    John

    Well,

Sheet of MDF in my town is about $32 a sheet. Seems like you could process one into MDF speaker boxes in hurry. Say, 20 minutes or less per sheet. 20 minute remove and reload time (customer deals with onion skin). 40 minutes per panel. $75/hr to $100/hr seems fair, if they know what they are doing.

Therefore, go talk to any CNC equipped cabinet shop. If they are looking for work, they are looking for you. Right now.

    Cheers,

    Rob

Our machine could do it in about 5 minutes a sheet. We'd charge about $125-$150/ hour for cutting time, plus time for unloading the material, stacking it and bundling it up. We'd also add about 20% to our cost for the MDF, but we can get it for $22-$25 per sheet for 3/4".

Possibly another $150-$200 for programming and setup. Another $150 for tooling.

If you can find a large custom shop with big industrial machines that would be interested, it would probably end up cheaper than someone with a shopbot, due to the much quicker cycle times. But a shop like ours wouldn't really be interested in a job like this, unless we were slow.
