    Are you using AutoCAD?
    What version?
    What version dxf?
What are you opening them with that shows them as faceted?

in dxf, solids are there.. however they are in a format that readable for autodesk programs..
what you see they are submeshes.. for other programs..
so getting out from dxf a solidmodel, you need autocad..

your other way using acis, iges format..

some other program, like rhino, bobcad and i think solidworks too, reading directly autocad files.. so that could be another way..

    Where's the .dxf coming from?
If it's smooth in AutoCAD, type FACETRES and enter 10 before exporting.

you can try one more thing..
open your mesh, model in hexagon, and subdivide.. can happem you get back the same smooth model..

actually it never be same smooth.. however subdividing to smaller polys can result you get very close the geometry..

hexagon is free on the dazstudio website....
