I think I would go for the 770 over the 440 if engraving was high on my list. Better components, more accurate, a little slower but it will do.
And don't forget the new high speed spindle that you can install in the 1100.

Agreed! The 770 is great for engraving and for any application where you will be using <3/8" carbide end mill in tougher materials. The larger work envelope of the 770 vs. 440 would be a plus and the cost difference appears to be pretty negligible. To be honest my 770 rarely sees any aluminum. It has proven to be a workhorse for delivering fine detail features in Titanium and does very well with various stainless steels (304, 316, 440 etc.) to boot.
