Building an air cylinder counter balance for milling machine head.

    Hi,

I'm not a fan for gas struts so I decided to build an air cylinder based counter balance system for my BF20L machine.

I already have an air compressor and a 40x300mm dual action air cylinder. Z axis travel of the machine is 280mm so the cylinder I have should be guess. What else do I need? And a diagram of the system would be very informative.

Since you’ve already got the dual-action air cylinder and air compressor, here’s a setup that includes an air tank as a buffer to help maintain consistent pressure.

    • Air Tank (Buffer): Connect the compressor to the air tank through the pressure regulator. This setup keeps the tank filled at a regulated, stable pressure. Any leakage or drop in pressure will trigger the compressor to refill the tank.
    • Air Pressure Regulator: Position the regulator directly between the compressor and the air tank. This way, both the tank and cylinder maintain the same set pressure, perfect for providing consistent counterbalancing force.
    • Check Valve: Place a check valve between the compressor and regulator to prevent any backflow into the compressor, ensuring stable pressure in the tank and cylinder.
    • Flow Control Valves: Since you’re using a dual-action cylinder, you can keep one port open to atmosphere and connect the other port to the air tank.
    • Air Filter: (Optional) Positioned before the air tank, this filter will keep contaminants from reaching the system, which is especially important for smooth cylinder operation.
    • Pressure Gauge: (Optional) A gauge on the tank allows you to monitor the pressure, ensuring it remains at the optimal level.

With this setup, you’ll have steady pressure in both the tank and the cylinder, ensuring reliable counterbalance without extra regulation between the tank and cylinder.

WOW I've missed your response. I'm appreciated.
