I rocked the ball screw back and forth with a vise grip on the end of the shaft. I see no encoder change on the screen. The motor was fighting to reposition itself.

Unless using a Galil card, Mach does not close the loop back to the controller, just to the drive.
The drive closes the loop.
So you won't see any difference on the screen.
