tekno, I think the 297/298 combo is a chopper full - 1/2 step board, the a3977 board from Phil's site is also a chopper board that do microstepping.

I pulled the 3 axis interface board off my website and just left the 4 axis (of course it can be used with 3 axis or 2 axis or 1). Reason, just easier to support one board. If your headed down the old 3 axis board path, I still have the data and will be glad to answer questions, email files, etc. There is some documentation started now for the 4 axis board. If a person wants to leave off the 4th IDC pin header (less than a buck) there is little cost difference to build, so to me it just makes sense. Plus look at all the posts where people are building 4 axis to use on their 3 axis machines! (GROWTH POTENTIAL!) Unless otherwise talked out of it, I'm probably going to reduce the number of files on my website. Basically for each board going to one pdf documentation file, which will have a schematic and layout in it, one pdf file for copper, and possibly leaving a pdf schematic also. Trying to organize, unclutter the webpage and free up some webspace. Thoughts?

Sounds like a good idea. It will make it easier to see what's what at a glance.
Do you have any plans for a PIC microstepping driver in the works. I know there are one or two mentioned on the "zone". You seem very active, supportive & regular updates. Would be nice to see a microstep driver.

Actually there is one microstepping driver on the site. The A3977 (although I wouldn't recommend it to anybody that is not highly knowledgable of electronics), and the L297-298 board.
Also, Pigifly has finished a one sided layout for the L297-8 board and has started a new thread on the ZONE here:

The L297 will do half steps. What is your primary reason for wanting microsteps, resolution, quietness? Because there are some downsides of microstepping also. I can't say that I have found a good reason for a cnc size machine to do microsteps for the tradeoff.

My motors resonate/vibrate quite badly at certain speeds as my boards are full step. Extra resolution of microstepping would not be required, but it's there anyway.
What I require that my current boards do not give me is:
Current limiting (Chopper)
Quieter/smoother running
Maybe 1/2 steps would reduce the vibration a bit?? The 297-8 would also give me current limiting.
Would you say that half stepping would be enough to reduce the vibration. If so, I'll maybe have a bash at building the 297-8.

A chopper alone may solve your problem.

half step does make a difference, I built the discrete board full step, and the UCN5804
version full/halfstep capable, and I like the smoother motion with the 1/2 step of UCN5804, less noise.

I got hook with the picmicro thingies,
I'm trying to build a plotter/vinyl cutter, like on Luberth.com site, as
it is considerably quiet in operation, compare to cnc router.
I built the prototype for pstep board, based on the pictures on the site,
I can now blink a led using serial port I'm now attaching the discrete board
to it and see if I could step it.

Ito, that is correct. I downloaded my website eagle .brd file and its the same as my local file. Pins 6, 7, and 8 are all grounded. Yes you may use the green area for anthing you please.
