    That drawbar is held by a retainer that can be removed so it works like normal,
    The little 3/8 tit that you tighten to snug the collet sure won't take much torque.
    Manual guys need to take it easy.
    The retainer screws onto the spindle and lets you put a wrench on to tighten/loosen the drawbar without needing a spindle lock or brake.
    I'll replace all that for a power drawbar.

    Thanks a lot for the measurements Hoss. The only one that is very strange, is the spindle diameter at 3.063". The quill is just what it should be, but for that quill diameter, I thought the spindle should be 2.36" ??....which is what Grizzly and Lathemaster both advertise. Do you know what they are measuring at 2.36"? Thanks again.

    i think he measured the lower part thats outside the head. the quill sleeve inside the head should be 60mm according to the grizzly spec.

    I just measured the exposed bits real quick last night, thought that was what you were looking for.
    My quill handle key went awol when I took it off for the move so I couldn't move it to expose the quill.
    It is 2.36. again with calipers.

    On the left side of the head their is that plastic splash shield. It hangs way down in the way and on mine if you open it it turns off the machine.

    I see no reason to leave it on, it is just one more thing to run into with the vice.

    Are you going to remove yours?

    It was gone before I took the mill out of the crate.
    I'll yank the guard limit switch housing shortly and bypass the switch.
    That's what safety glasses are for.

    Good to see the weekend, now I have time to get the mill up on the stand and out of the kitchen.

    Interesting read Hoss. We will have to compare the few different BF20 designs out there now to see what parts are interchangeable.

    Hey hoss, I thought you were gonna NC that RF45.
    I am a great admirer of your work, you should go big league one day and get Mach3 running on an old 3 phase vertical machine. (wouldn't fit in your cellar!!!)

    Funny mate, Been busy with the new toy in between the Olympics coverage.
    Funny thing about the 3 phase vertical, they just put another old Bridgeport
    up for auction at work, I could have had it for $150.
    No way to get it home and into the basement.

    That's too bad. You could have put that to good use. Everyone's interests & situation gives them a different threshold for size/weight...regardless of price/performance. Thanks Hoss, btw, for providing the comparison of smaller mills on the market.

    I am not too familiar with this stuff, but does the .166" per crank turn on the Z-axis indicate a metric screw? I know most here are going CNC and don't care, but I was curious.

    .166" would be 1/6 of an inch if you convert it to millimeters it is 4.2164mm.

    Ahhh, it's the fractions. The answer is so obvious now that you explained it. Initially, I thought it was such an odd number. Maybe all mills have odd numbers. Intuitively, just expected something round for inch screws...like .2" per crank turn.

    With .166" you would need 6 turns per inch of travel and at .100" you would need 10 turns. And with the high school students I see coming out of school now-a-days counting to 6 is a challenge for most of them let alone all the way to 10.

    I've actually got a BSME. I could help you with non-linear 3rd-order partial differential equations....but I never got the fractions thing...lol.
