    I agree.

What do you think of replacing the stock motor controller with the KBCC-125R? I know it's not cheap, but it seems like it would clean up the installation and the instant reverse can be used for tapping. Just a thought......

Either way, I like your belt drive conversion.

you know there Hoss you're right, and I also hold my hand up to say that only for finding your website I may not have taken the plunge myself and may still be in research mode, but there's another way of looking at this scenario too......when I fitted my 2HP three phase motor on top of my BF20 (G0704 Clone) I thought gosh that thing looks ridiculous....’but’ when I bought the BF I definitely intended to upgrade the motor as I simply couldn't afford a bigger milling machine and still can't and the motor upgrade regardless of size does give an alternative to a guy to spending more money on a machine when you could as an option fit a larger motor, you know who cares if it doesn’t look right……

Good points. My thought was to be able to get a little more HP and clean up the somewhat kludgy remote speed control issues with the stock controller at the same time - my biggest concern is the added weight & size of the nema 56c motor. Looking at one of Hoss' videos, it appears that upgrading to the motor for the BF30 would solve one half of the equation, and changing the controller to something like the KBCC-125R would solve the other, and for about the same or slightly less $$$.

That's one good looking mount he made for it. Isn't bigger always better?

you know I'm not the best person to give electricial advice as I myself am posting questions to learn in other threads too and Hoss's knowledge far surpasses mine.....but from my own reading I understood that the DC motor will not give the same bite as an AC motor......and when using an AC motor to control RPM you use the VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) and when controling a DC motor you use a 'controller' or the KBCC-125R as you suggested....

oh and just to add here too the added weight of a larger motor can be mitigated by one of two things either add a counter balance (springloaded/gasloaded compression struts or a weight connected with pulleys) and or a larger Stepper/Server motor on the Z....

Just something I've been wondering, how well are the g0704's made?

Are all the dovetails parallel/perpendicular where they should be? Is everything flat where it needs to be flat?

Some of the cheaper imports seem to have concave ways or other funkiness.

    Quality of manufacture

I just received my G0704 took it all apart in preparation for conversion to CNC and am pleased with the quality. I lapped all of the dovetails in and was surprised by the excellent contact of dovetail, gibs and base contact. I do not know how good the electronics are, haven't got there yet but the iron seems to be good. My 2 cents worth

    Hoss,

Thanks for sending the unzipped files. I appreciate it.

Do you plan on doing anything more with your 4th axis? Did you have to do anything special to run your 4th axis in index mode as compared to lathe mode?

Also wondering how the mini-mobile base is working out for the G0704? Is it working out OK as is, or did you have to replace any of the wobbly pins that came with it? Are two fixed supports going to be enough, or do you think you're going to modify it to have four fixed supports?

I'm having a love/hate relationship with your new 3D printer. On one hand it is pretty darn cool seeing what you're doing with the 3D printer, but on the other hand the new cool stuff on the G0704 has slowed to a crawl.

I plan on having more 4th axis fun but as you mentioned, got a little sidetracked with printer fun.
Only thing i did with the base so far was shim under one side to level the table.
It still shimmies but a little tlc with my welder should fix that.

Thanks, I still have projects on the list for the mill so I'll be back at it eventually.

Hoss, you're a blue and maize fan? Sweet! After a rough few years, 2011 was a pleasant surprise in football. Looking forward to the 2012 season when we beat the defending national champs, the Spartans, and the Buckeyes :-)
