    Spindle Motor Selection

    Hi All,
Is there any spindle motors avaliable that has the capability of both low speed (for metal) and high speed (for wood)? Or is it best to have 2 motors? The plans that I am looking at calls for a 3 to 3 1/2 hp motor.
    Any sugestions?
    Thanks, Walt

When you say metal, do you mean steel? Or non-ferrous metals? If you don't need to cut steels, a 3HP variable speed router can usually slow down to around 10K rpm, and you can get router bits made specifically for aluminum that work at those and higher speeds.

    Gerry,
Are you talking about an off the shelf router like Porter Cable or are there other types of spindle motors that are capable of these wide ranges of speeds?

Yes, a PC 7518 has 5 speeds, from 10K to 22K or so. An 892 has continuosly variable speed. Just about any other option will set you back a few thousand dollars. There are a lot of discussions in some of the other forums about spindles.
