    1997 Haas VF9 Y axis vibration

When feeding on the Y axis machine vibrates badly, I can't get a good finish. Also, I am informed it rarely needs way lube. What could be the cause of this?

Did this just start happening? If so, it is time to change the Y-axis servo motor. You should feel lucky if you are changing it for the first time on a 1997 machine.

It is pretty obvious on these machines when they start to go out. One axis cuts smooth like normal and the other isn't. They usually start getting worse and worse.

Pretty much that easy to tell. Could be something more odd than that, but I doubt it.

They don't go through an obnoxious amount of lube really. You can easily go a couple months without adding any on a lightly used machine. They are not "heavy oilers" by any means.

    Good luck.

I've heard you can tune the amplifier boards to take the vibration out....has anyone heard of that? Also, Selway Machine in Hayward, Ca. has looked at it 3 times, and doesn't know what's wrong. Is there anyone else in the Bay Area qualified to fix Haas Mills?

the tach can give you vibration also, check the brush's in the motor to make sure they are good. if the brush are good there could be carbon build up on the comutator(sp) clean it with a pencil eraser.

    Y axis vibration

It's not acceptable for a dealer to say "they don't know what's wrong and can't fix it."
    Brush or brushless?
Brushless motors just don't wear out that way.
Brush motors could need new brushes.
Screw could be damaged and alternately binding.
Amplifier could have a problem (brushless only - brush would just stop).
Parameters could be "messed with" - make sure no changes.
Can't tune this out if it worked once and then started to shake
Lean on dealer and threaten to call Haas.
They WILL charge you BUT they WILL fix it.
Could swap amplifiers to see if problem moves - easy connectors.

This is for axis hum, usually at rest though:

There are 4 bit switches in the parameters for each axis that can be adjusted. They are Low pass 1X, low pass 2X, Dfilter X8, and Dfilter X4. Change them 1 at a time (either to a 0 or 1) and it will get rid of the humming. My mill had a similar issue in the Y and Z axis. Changing the parameters took care of it.
(Don't forget to change setting 7 to allow the parameter changes, plus it must be in E-Stop to change parameters)
    Parameter 1=X axis
    Parameter 15=Y axis
    Parameter 29=Z axis

I do not know if it will help with your cutting problems. I had a VF-4 that was abused and would not cut in the Y+ direction without chattering no matter what we did.
    Hope it helps
Apparently I don't know anything, so please verify my suggestions with my wife.
