I have an Atlas MK2 10100 mini-lathe that I am trying to get into working order. Everything is in great shape, however I am having trouble engaging the back gear drive. I followed all of the instructions to adjust the gear lash, however there is no way to move the gear (X axis direction) to engage the headstock spindle gear. The gears look very good with little wear. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Engaging backgear on the Model 101 Atlas 6" lathe. At first sight there is no obvious way of releasing the large V pulley from its embrace with the spindle. The secret is the "external locking ring" on the end of the pulley; this is simply pulled outwards to uncouple it from the shaft and the backgear lever then operated as usual to mesh the respective gears.

Did anyone figure out how to engage the back gear on the atlas model 10100. I have the manual and I've followed the instructions but the back gear doesn't seem to fully engage. Any ideas? This was my grandfather's lathe and was not used (or used very little) prior to his passing. The gears show little or no wear.
