    Trumpf laser problems. Help please

Our company recently purchased a 99 model Trumph laser that was upgraded in 03 to 4000 watt. We have had minimal training and its killing us. Can anyone tell me if there is a starting point for the focus? We are running 12mm mild steel on tech table ST050O40. It is cutting but the slag on the bottom keeps the piece together. using 1.4 nozzle and 7.5 head. We have no manuals on focus adjustment and when we try the focus test we have a problem keeping nitrogen pressure. Also we were not told but if you do run the focus test do you run it on the same thickness material that you plan to cut? The cut we are producing is not a nice clean cut what so ever.Any help is appreciated and I know these are probably stupid questions but all I have ever run is a water jet and this is a totally different beast.I thought that once the program was wrote and put in it would run with minor adjustments.

The focus test on our machine tells us what gauge steel to use for the test. Ours says use 1.5mm 2.0mm or 2.5mm mild steel. The focus test may have slag however we were told in training that this does not matter.

When you run the focus test coupon, set your focus offset to 0mm and cut the coupon. The coupon has 5 or 6 slots in it. If the focus is correct, the middle slot should be the most narrow. Check with a feeler gauge. If the thinnest slot is offset from the center, you must adjust your focus to the postive or negative side. ( the coupon is marked - and + ) Each line is a step up or down in focus. The Focus test program tells you how much that step is in mm. On ours, default, is .5mm offset. Meaning that if the smallest slot is only one step off center, you adjust the offset by .5mm to center it. Adjust and recut the focus coupons until the smallest slot is in the middle.

I would not cut 12mm steel with nitrogen as it requires such a high pressure. Try oxygen, Cuts smooth and uses under 1 bar of pressure to cut .5" steel as opposed to 15-18 BAR with Nitrogen.
