Re: Chatter when milling in X direction

I gave up trying to rough or do anything with anything bigger than a 3/8 endmill. I was using a half inch but that extra distance the cutting edges are from the center require more leverage to cut and make these smaller CNC mills chatter. I switched to a 3/8 Kyocera endmill and was able to speed up more than 50 percent. Torque diminishes quite fast the farther you are from center of the rotation and it takes a lot more power to cut. For steel, I use a 3/8 mill with 1/2 inch long flutes when making cuts like what you are doing, it makes a HUGE difference.

One thing that helped me with some chattering issues was to retram the mill. Helped a ton..

Did you also tram the "nod", if you had any? If so, how?

I did not. My tram was pretty off though.

    Thanks.
I was watching another vid I did awhile back.....I noticed that I got the chatter even on really short cuts in +X direction. I thought it was a work holding problem at the time, but maybe not.

If it is mainly in the X axis and not in the Y axis, then it is not in the cutter and I don't think it is in the tram either.
You have something a shade loose on either the X axis or on the milling head in that direction.

    Cheers

Yep...just the X. I've heard a couple of Tormach owners say they have similar chatter. It was also mentioned that it might possibly be in the linear ways on the Z axis.
