Building a Business & Family around CNC Router Tables

I got a chance to speak with Emmy Award winning Videographer Sean Fairburn about how he is building a business & family around CNC Router Tables. Sean is a very interesting man and a great role model for his kids. Together they make the Gaming Throne Desk/Chair.

The cut out over 90 parts with the CNC Router table to create each chair . No two are alike. The children design, modify and make each part! Pretty impressive. If you want to hear about it, check out Episode 10 of the CNC Router Tips Podcast.

I tried to get my kids interested. Showed them all the cool stuff you could do, you imagination the only limit. Would have killed to have access to one when I was a kid. But they didn't care. Ugh.

I learned a lot from my father but I certainly didn't want to get involved in his trade. In any event teach them what you can. Sometimes this means roping them into a job they don't want to do.

As for tools in general I would have loved a real shop when growing up. We had tools but where real thin on "machine tools". I consider the little planner and the jointer I took years to buy a massive improvement over what I had access to as a kid. So yeah I understand the feeling.

There is very little 'teaching' a generation that is more intent on watching a little screen constantly, rather thank looking up and experiencing the real world.

Keep at it. All kids are resistant to change or trying new things.... Especially teens and tweens.

One is off in college and the other not far behind. That time has passed. BTW, glad to see you up and around Bill. I know you from long long ago in EDF jets.

I didn't forget you. Glad to see you are still around to. What are you building now? Both R/C and CNC?

Re: Building a Business & Family around CNC Router Tables

I have been so busy with work over the past couple years that I haven't done much with my CNC. And after being the Pres. or other board member of the local club for years, where the same few people did all the work and you couldn't get anyone else to do much of anything, I distanced myself from RC. Skipped out for several years. Am just getting back into slope flying. Cleaning up my shop and getting the CNC ready to cut some plugs and molds and start designing and flying my own stuff. A buddy has an old CNC foam cutter I am working on getting from him, it's controlled by a MM2001 board I etched myself probably 12 years ago.

Find another kid - niece, nephew, etc. -- that is interested, and you'll see how fast yours want to learn everything.
