Tormach Controller or PathPilot Clone for PCNC 440

I'm trying to have to avoid the tormach controller for my new 440, but I'm unsure how much work it is to get a PathPilot setup on a conventional PC.

    If I have:

    PathPilot tested motherboard
    compatible processor
    and PP770-UPGRADE - PathPilot™ Upgrade (Part# 35458)

will it basically work right out of the box, or do I have to mess around with MESA firmwares etc?

PathPilot is now windows and will search for the mesa card. there are two types, one pci & the other pci-e, you order from Tormach the one whits you need.

So there is no reason to buy a tormach controller at all then?

I'll get he PCI version from tormach, but there is no need to edit the .ini or hal files then right?

what is the difference between the 770 and the 1100 upgrade kits?

From what I can see the only difference is the version of the manual provided.

So if I have the Mesa 5i25 card, compatible motherboard and processor, I can install pathpilot from the 770 upgrade kit and it will allow me to select 440 as an option and it'll just install those drivers and config files?

That's what I did. I'm using a Gigabyte GA-H81M-HD3 (from the list of tested motherboards) with an Intel Dual Core Pentium G3260/3300.
All machine types can be loaded from the PathPilot software:

There's a very good reason, but you may conclude it's not good enough.

Tormach supports the Tormach controller. If you have a problem with their controller, they'll be with you until it works right. If you don't have a Tormach supplied controller, you're responsible for it. Tormach almost never leaves you hanging, but if you have a computer/controller problem with a non-Tormach controller, you may hit a point where you're on your own, or where the best advice you can get is that it seems to be a controller problem. At which point, you're the support. As long as you're clear on that, OK with it, and won't complain if it happens, you'll be fine with a non-Tormach controller.

That's exactly what happened with my M3 controller, which was non-Tormach. It got goofy. Tormach was great, but it just got strange -and almost had to be having a hardware problem. Easy decision, I switched to PP, I bought the hardware from Tormach. That turned out to be an even better decision when I had sporadic (and hard to pin down) hardware problems with the new controller. Tormach just fixed it.

Your call. You'll get great support either way.

He probably meant "is *not* Windows". The more typos the greater the chance it is someone using a smartphone to reply and sometimes they can be a real hoot.

Path pilot seems to be more reliable, and we have heard from dozens of people that have had no problem using there own computer, and only two who did have problems. And that was because their mesa card came with the wrong jumpers. The Mesa rep on this forum solved their problem.

IMHO, use your own computer. Spend the money you save on more tooling. Shipping from Tormach is expensive, so making a bigger order saves you money in the future.
