    Z-axis weight compensation

My CAMaster CNC had quite a heavy Z-axis with a spindle and two outboard 1-3/4 HP routers. It had a pneumatic cylinder to assist the stepper with lifting the Z car.

My DIY project is lighter but I’m wondering if it’s worth including a similar weight compensating system. The cylinder is in place (it was originally the only motivation on the Z axis of this P2P drilling machine) and in fact it is mostly working. However the extra mass and complexity may be unnecessary on my build as the only major weight on the Z car is the 2.2 HP spindle. So far the servo doesn’t seem to have any trouble lifting the mass of the spindle.

I am having an issue with the regulator not bleeding off pressure when the cylinder compresses, so the servo must actually apply increasing force to move the spindle downward.

2,2 kw spindle dont weight too much , so u dont need a weight counterbalancing .

    I second the previous reply.
In my experience, if the motor is not struggling to raise the Z, no need to help it any.

I wanna know what Z-axis is made of? AISI 52100 or other steel grade?
