I'm a retired engineering person.....that is, I've been in many fields of engineering but now I spend most of my time re-organising my garage workshop to make more room for things I want to make, but every time I go out there to make more room I just seem to move stuff around.
My latest hobby is building a 3018 mini router from the ground up to make it perform miracles as opposed to just scratching on wood etc........in effect it's a big boy's Meccano set as it's constructed from bolt together extrusions etc but has potential if done correctly.
Now, after 40 years of sitting in a corner gathering dust, I've just rebuilt a small jig borer to make it perform as a manual mill......it basically is a vertical mill but had a 2 Morse spindle so that was one reason it never got into action........now it has a spindle with an ER32 chuck on the end as I only use it for small work and all my plug in tools for it are now 20mm straight shank.
That means I can use all the cutters straight in collets in the spindle and with a 20mm straight shank for other tools like drill chucks, boring head and a slitting saw arbor.
One problem I encountered and that was it had a quill, so I kept that for drilling only and now use the main head casting for the Z axis move........it needs to be re-engineered to get a DRO on it as the dials are all Imperial.
I already have a CNC mill so I don't need a second one.
Ian.
My main hobby is keeping my 1926 Aveling and Porter Steam Roller on the road!! Not much CNC used to build this old girl, just good old fashioned Victorian engineering that is as good today as it was 96 years ago.

I like programming, but only silly or whimsical programs. The second I sit down to make something "practical" I lose all interest.
