I quickly realized these routers make a real mess. I decided I need a dust shoe and am getting a dust collector.

my main question is what is a good quiet dust collector?

how many CFM is a good amount of pull?

any brands better or quieter?


we have Delta, Jet, and others I can buy locally. any sugestions?

Try searching using 'Dust Collector' or 'Cyclone' here on CNCzone. There have been a number of threads on this topic and some of them describe making dust collectors. As far as I can recall the important thing is not the amount of 'suck' but more the 'volume flow'.

I got the Shop fox offered by SS.

• Air Suction Capacity: 1550 CFM
• Bag Size (Dia. x depth): 19" x 33" (2)
• Has a 6" inlet with a removable "Y" fitting with two 4" openings
• Height (With bags inflated): 78"
• Motor Size: 2 H.P., prewired to 220V, single phase, 3450 RPM

I'd say go bigger. The one I got seems kind of weak. It works for removing the fine particles in the air. But leaves's a majority of the chips on the table.
Also the factory supplied dust shoes brush hairs got in the spindle during tool changes. At this point I've removed the whole set up.To get away from the dust and noise I set up a camera and watch the machine from my office. :banana: And use a Shop-vac the clean up the mess. Buy the Micro fine filter or you'll be loosing suction real quick with MDF. I also use a 30" x 5' pc of acrylic as a shield across the front to keep as much debris as I can on the table.

Trying to run that dust collector using a 2-1/2" hose 30' long isn't going to work. You need to run at least a 4" hose right to the machine.

For a commercial setup, I'd recommend a 5HP unit and run a 5" hose right to the spindle, with some 3" long brushes that seal to the table. It still won't get all the chips off the table, but it should keep the air pretty clean.

You can get them from Tool Crib of the North in Duluth or they may also have one in Fargo or grand Forks if you want to drive and pick one up or you can order one through Amazon.com that will come from them.

Otherwise my favorite place to buy power tools is a place called The Trading Post in Gordonsville,MN, which is by Albert Lea 507 448 3302. They have everything you could possibly want and can get it to you in as little as 2 days. This is a family run business in a town of about 100 people. They know their tools and have great customer service.

I saw that video the other day. SS is nothing close to that.
There appears to be an actuator to move the "Foot" out of the way for the tool change. Which could make a set up like that impractical on the SS. Great idea though!!!
The piping is 3" to a reducer for the 2.500 hose
When installing I mocked up a couple of different sized pipes to test it out. All with about the same results. Could be the SS collector plate is set up for that particular hose size.Which I never changed. So no matter what the pipe size inline the restriction there could be the problem. I haven't even thought about in in quiet a while. One thing about PVC and dust, lots of static electricity. I ended up running a ground wire in the pipe. Cant say it was perfect, but it did dampen the bite of the shock.

if so how do you move it out of the way for automatic tool changing ??

after reading geerys comment i was on my way to charllote woodworking show, (it's amazing how much stuff you no longer need after going cnc!!)
i got flanges for 3" /4" pipe to make dust collection better, altough i know we will not get it all

Yeah, its attached to the spindle. It's just an alum. plate with 2 holes.
There's a collar on the hose side to attach the line to. Not much to brag about. The CAMaster looks way more functional.

You should have 4" coming out of the collector, reduce to 3" for about a foot the down to you 1.5" hose.
Look at you in ceiling to get an idea for what I'm talking bout.

the dust foot is stationary and is in place when spindle lifts up and over cone for tool change, nothing wrong with that less moving parts!! kustom this can be built easy enough the only requirement is the length of the nylon brush
as it needs a soft bend of 2.5 to three inches, todd how long are the brushes?

the attachment to the router is just machining the brush material is mounted the same as the one i got from home depot just wih i could remember the brand name. i will say this the brush i got from grainger was toooo stiff and did not fit in the holder sleve. grainger told me when i returned it that it was a new product for them

The bristles are 3.00 or so in length. ger21's got my wheels turning. I may just run the whole thing 4".

Sorry It posted before I finished it!
I was talking about how they layout the AC Duct in the ceiling. It steps down to maintain the pressure. They same goes for long runs in duct collectors.

Now that makes more sense. Thanks for clarifying I just need to make sometime to play around with it. I'm still leaning toward a full 4" dia from collector to spindle. At least to see how the air flow works out. But I see your point.

dust collection has always been a neccessay evil and the only "quiet ones" i have ever seen were the one you cannot see!! we have several of the three hp freestanding units, and i am putting a new one together for the cnc's
we have moved and reconfigured our shop several times so the portability has always been an issue. this is changing if you can build a well ventilated closet that is insulated you can bring noise to managable just keep motor cool when running
