I actually have the same issue with my R2E4 which I have been chasing for a while.
Basically this means that the serial link between the BSP2 card and the front panel control is not working properly. In my case the issue is on the BSP2. Based on my previous examination of the control panel PCB I'd say it is less likely there is a problem there since it is very simple stuff.
Do you have any tools to troubleshoot this type of stuff? Schematics? If you don't have the schematics I can email you a PDF of them.
