advice on direction control for backgear to mach

Title is kinda confusing.. I have a bp series 1 cnc mill with the backgear .I have a ac drive installed and Mach3 installed.

Is there a way to tell mach that the spindle is in open or backgear so when it is shifted mach will see this and run the spindle the correct direction? I figured a micro switch at the shift lever but dont know what to do with it. Was told that this wasnt possible but I really cant believe that with all the wizs(sp) around!

    Thanks Jim.

I posted this in mach mill also...

When you do pulley setup in Mach3 (Config->SpindlePulleys), in addition to the pulley ratio and desired min/max speeds, each pulley can be flagged as "reversed", which tells Mach3 that the motor direction needs to be reversed when that pulley is selected. This was done specifically to deal with the backgear on most knee mills.
