Spindle for metal and wood. Motor size question

    Hi Group
I`m working on a spindle configuration for my DIY router. I`m hoping
to use a spindle that was purchased on ebay to mill wood and metal.
Its too early to tell if my machine is rigid enough to mill steel but that
is one of my additional hopes. I`m planning to use a 3/4 hp permanent
magnet motor to drive the spindle. The spindle will be driven by 3/4 wide,
3/8 pitch timing belts. My biggest design issue is will a 3/4 PM motor be
large enough for all the materials I hope to mill including steel. The motor
speed is 2500 rpms. I choose this over a 1725 to allow me to change pulleys
to get the spindle up to 8000 -10000 rpms for the machining of wood. I`m
hoping someone could provide some advice on this issue.
Note: The motor is a Baldor CDP3443 with their variable speed controller.

Well, a big consern is what the bearings can withstand for the spindle when choosing speeds. Over at surpluscenter, they have 2.5hp DC motors and controllers for a rather good price, and even better is that they are rated over 6000rpm.

There is the same motor with a diff mount too,

    the controller I have,
    the controller JRoque uses:

Before deciding on the speeds, figure out what the bearings can handle.
What spindle taper and all does that have?
