    stepper motor selection

Hey, I'm brand new. I enjoy the building, mechanical aspects, but I'm not sure on a whole bunch of things. First post is- How do you know how much holding torque you need for your x,y, z axis motors? I'm hand building out of assorted scrap. Is there a good method of testing your lead screws and telling how much torque you need? And how are these motors rated amps work out when you have a chopper drive and run them at higher voltage? My board is only good for 2.5 amps max (maybe). If I need more torque than the motors can supply, can I get gear reductions to help the motor out? And how does that screw up the software trying to drive that motor? I am building on less than shoestring budget. Thanks,Dextron
