    To good to be true?

I found this link for a stepper controller:

    http://electronics-diy.com/stepper_motors.php

Would that design actually work? All the other ones I've seen are a lot more complicated. If the design would work, does anyone know how well it would work?

Yes it will work for small unipolar motors.

However, bipolar motors are more efficient and a constant current chopper drive with a high voltage supply and low voltage motor will be able to go a lot faster than a constant voltage drive.

Would that circuit be enough to power a CNC designed to cut circuit boards?

Yes I think it would just about do that. Depending on your lead screw pitch it may be a little slow but I am sure it could be functional with the right motors.

They need to take no more than 0.5A per coil at the supply voltage you use.

Does anyone know any good motors that would work with that circuit. Im really new to the CNC world, but eager to learn I guess

Also, would it be possible to use a larger motor, say 1A, if you were to put a resister somewhere between pin 9 of the microchip and the power line

No you would need a more powerful chip.
