Trying to open a .prt file-any suggestions?

Hi. I have a project that is in .prt format and I can't get it open. I know it is not a Solidworks file, but I thought Solidworks EDrawings might open it , but no. Downloaded a couple programs (STPViewer, and EDrawings Rapidfire Light) and still no luck. I got the files as a zip. I think maybe the files are corrupt. Any suggestions?

Also, is there an ideal freeware viewer for most types of CAD files-just to view and get geometry from?

    Thanks.

It is probably a CADKEY file. Might be a ProE file.

Its probably a ProE file. Solidworks should be able to open it. Do a "file" open then scroll down the list to the ProE type.

    Good Luck

Could be any of about 6 different formats...

At one time the .prt extension was very popular, so, besides the ones already mentioned, it could also be an older CATIA file or an old or even a new Unigraphics/NX file. Due to the age of some of these systems and how very different they have become over time, there is nothing that will open every file from every system out there. The new stuff is becoming more standardized but we are still not there yet...

If you suspect that it might be one of those, I could probably do a conversion for you, if you run out of options.

I am the last person that would want to take all of the fun out of a project but can you ask the person that you got the data from what it might be...?
