USB connection problems with Win7 and i5 processors

I've got this problem with my USB controller. It connects and runs reliably with XP and most computers, but with Win7 on fast i5 computers it has connection problems.
Its running in CDC serial mode and connects as a comm port. with the i5 win 7 it has a hard time connecting even though it shows the com port is there, and if i close the windows (starcnc) controller program and restart it, it usually won't connect unless i unplug the USB cable and try again.

I don't have these problems in XP or win7 on a slower computer.

The controller is running (2) 18F processors, a 18F2455 for the USB interface that connects to a 18F45K22 thru opto couplers. Its runs reliably once its connected though.

The other problem is on some computers if you leave it plugged in while booting the computer, it isn't recognized and you need to unplug it and reset it.
Anyone else have problems with win7 on USB ?

What type of USB port are they? 1.0, 2.0, 3.0?

Although they are supposed to be "backwards compatible" I still find myself having issues with going from 3.0 to a device that is designed for 1.0 or 2.0.

Also, what version of windows are the computers? Are they x64 or x86?

Its Win7 32 bit, on a i5 processor. I think its reading as USB1.0 although my pic is setup for 2.0. (how do you tell in windows ?, device manager doesn't say)

Is there a better way to view and troubleshoot USB activity in windows ?
