Re: Welcome thread-tell us about you.

    Hi All,

My Name is Ed Smits. I guess my passion started in high school when I took 2 years of Machine technology. I learned how to operate manual lathes, Bridgeport Knee mills, manual grinders, MIG TIG gas and Stick welding, casting and a little bit of CNC work. I have awards from local shows for a few hammers I have made, chess sets, as well as I would make my own bike parts from time to time. That class afforded me an opportunity to start in the manufacturing environment as a Co-op working at a local Die maker. While working there I would run raw material through the saws, clean up, Polish dies by hand, and eventually had a brief period where I was running CNC lathes. From there I moved over to a large local family owned show, Fitzpatrick Mfg. Co. where I started in packaging and assembly, eventually moving over to running my own fabrication jobs for an oilfield supplier and gained about 4 years experience with set up's, programming and editing, and of course operating mazak Lathes, Doosan and Puma Lathes, Mori Seiki MV-40 mills, Haas Vf2ss and VF4SS mills.

While my passion has always been machining, my career goals took a different role. I had always been interested in human resources and project management. After 8.5 years with Fitz I decided it was time to move over to focus on my career i was going to school for. I started out as a temporary employee with Kelly Services, recruiting for customer service reps for Apple and recruiting for delivery driver's for FedEx. After a year I was offered an opportunity to work full-time with Kelly as a recruiter for Dow Chemical Company. I support various locations across the US, recruiting for anything from general fork lift operators all the way up to high level scientists and chemical engineers. One of the main reasons I took this position was because one of the Dow facilities I would be recruiting for has a need for CNC machinists. I now enjoy both of my passions recruiting CNC machinists and placing them in excellent opportunities with my customer.

I look forward to conversing with all of you and sharing our passion for all types of machining.

HI, my name is Randy. I've been a lathe operator for the past 15 years and have just recentley started machine re-builds. Mostly self taught in all aspects of the machining world, as I have had no formal training on anything from machine set-up to machining processes.

Hey! I am a tinkerer of sorts and thought I would get into the CNC game, having lots of fun with all of the research! X6 1500GT is the model I am playing around with, seems pretty cool so far! Here goes Z auto setting :-)

Hi all I'm albert recently retired from a 7 yr stint just now of electronics and electrical repairs, previously in the field of Industrial instrumentation and scada control systems.
Why I chose this seemed like a a lot of harmless fun building stuff trying to make things cost neutral with left over stuff.
It may not happen lol always a new gadget and a different way of doing things with Linux.
CertaInly a great forum so I thought I'd better join.. we might be all heading down the same way.. but isn't it fun

Re: Welcome thread-tell us about you.

Hi all, Joe here, new to CNC and machining in general. Just built my first machine from a Grizzly X2 mini mill and I am knee deep in the steep part of the learning curve. I'm a communications specialist with little to no background in any of this stuff but I got through a Keling C10, 4 KL-4030's, a UC100 USB motion controller, and a CNC Fusion 3 axis kit with minimal screaming and swearing. I want to be able to make small parts that I have always been unable to find for things my wife and I manage to break, additionally I would like to make some firearms parts and do some general tinkering. The X2 seemed to be the place to get my feet wet. I've had some small successes with Mach 3 and have managed to figure out how to draw some very basic parts with CorelCad, Autodesk Inventor and Cut2D. From the perspective of someone with no background whatsoever Cut2D is incredible and so far other than Mach 3 it is the only software I have purchased. CAM is where I think I will spend my most time studying and learning so any information/resources that have helped over the years for you experienced people would be appreciated.
