Hi all from Aubrey (AKA MadMan) form Johannesburg, South Africa.
My home CNC "career" started around 2000 when I built a small machine (on a 400mm x 400mm x 5mm piece of plate)
All the mechanics (slides, tables, screws, motor mounts etc) were done in 2 weeks and then the trouble started.
Those years pre-assembled modules were very expensive and all I could do was try to build what I needed myself off of circuits found on the web.
And of course there were endless compatibility issues.
But the biggest problem was me - although I am a qualified engineering artisan, I am worse than useless with electronics.
Essentially
Code:
ME + TRANSISTOR = EXPENSIVE BLUE SMOKE !!
After going through about 30 PIC processors and a lot of other "electronic" stuff (and 2 computers that I managed to blow up) I had a choice to make.
Eventually I shelved the project - simply too expensive and too grinding on the nerves and morale.
Now I have retired and we are busy getting ready to sell our house (with my 9 meter x 9 meter workshop) and I found the old mini mill project.
So it is now time for a second bite at the apple and try to get the mill working.
Other equipment I have : small Chinese lathe/mill, drill press, welder, grinders, power drills and a lifetimes worth of spanners and suchlike.
Once we have moved (November or so) I intend to complete the project and if/when that happens I have a NICE project in mind - more later on that.
So please be gentle because I am going to drive everyone totally nuts with my questions.
I am one of those people that cannot simply accept an answer if I do not understand it.
Drives my family up the wall. Most other sane people too - hence the name
