What would this basic part look like? CNC XZ Lathe

    Hey guys,

Very new to CNC and machining in fact. On a simple XZ plane lathe, could you please tell me what the outcome of this part would be. The grey background represents the part and the red(embarrassingly drawn in paint) represents the cut.

What Im lost on is what does the four arcs(yes those are arcs) at radius of .250 on all four courners do? What would this look like on a part?

My second question is, from what I understand on a XZ lathe what you do to one side of the part on a lathe you automatically do to all sides(because the part is constantly rotating.) Because of this, does one arc at one corner have to be programmed in and that is it and it would be the equivalent of the first picture I posted?

    Thank you for your time!

    What it looks like?
Depends on the diameter and length of the material.

going by scale, underthetyre, I think it's 3" dia x 1.75", but then photocopying a part to reverse engineer wouldn't be my first choice, a scale, a ruler? or even a vernier - kelef

This post relates directly back to your other post at: http://www.cnczone.com/forums/genera...lathe_arc.html

I want you to get a carrot and a knife. Hold the knife still against the carrot and rotate the carrot 360 degrees (just like a lathe would turn it). Watch the cutting of the knife. Now, cut about 1/4" off the end of the carrot so that you have a squared end. Hold the knife at about a 45 degree angle on the corner and rotate the carrot around 360 degrees again for the knife to cut off the corner. Watch the cutting action of the knife.

Lathe turning is essentially the same thing. Many people have difficulty envisioning the concept of holding the tool stationary and moving the work piece to do the cutting. This is why many more machine shop workers are more comfortable on mills than they are on lathes.
