    Work Holding

I am in the progress of making a front wheel hub for my road bike my target is a total weight less than 125g. i have machined the main shaft and the OD of the hub body and flanges. The issue is that i need bore the other end of the part.

i have tried to hold on the od of the flange but this is 3mm wide and 42mm dia the total part length is 80mm. the end has a 10mm deep 26 dia bearing seat which i don't really want to touch but is straight bored to 21/22 mm to just over halfway and was thinking this would be a good place to hold the part.

Any one come across this problem, i have been looking at expanding mandrels / arbors but the reach is a little low.

i will try and post a pic as a picture says a thousand words.

Can you not use a fixed steady to support the end of the piece?

try changing your order of operations.

skim cut your stock to true up the blank
face to length on both ends
    drill and bore both ends
mount on an arbor that has a center drilled end so you can support it while the outer surface is machined.

machine the arbor near the headstock and the arbor nut to seat in the bearing bores

that should remove the need to clamp on the flanges or the bore

Disclaimer: I am not a machinist, but I stayed at a Holiday Inn last night.
