great link ynneb except I'd like to add one thing, if you're using a 3 jaw chuck I would change the order so that you so that you have your jaws at the same point on the work piece at all times in the process so it would be:

    Machine OD
    Drill Hole
Solder in bit-could be in the lathe if you put some wood on the ways IF NOT
Mark where each one of your jaws sits and number them (3 jaw chucks arn't always true) this way you can have your piece in the same spot on the jaws so you don't wind up with a wobble on your final piece
    Clean up
    Part off

I hope you guys can understand what I'm saying, if not just say so I'll try to elaborate.

I think www.industrialhobbies.com is an awesome webpage and his ideas are some of the best I've seen. I think the next step is designing an automatic toolchange with a tool rack on the table to hold all the tools. Designing a spindle addon that releases/grabs the tool reliably would be a huge challange, but I won't put anything past industrialhobbies. Oh, and their ballscrew prices are really good also. I think the 5/8" is even cheaper than mcmaster.
