    NOOB questions about turning wood

Hi all, I am a CNC machinist by trade for about 20 years. I want to try wood working as a hobby and have access to 2 manual lathes. Just wondering how much of my experience as a machinist I can bring to woodworking as a hobby? IE; do you incorporate a lot of formulas for calculating SFM, chip load things of that nature? Or is it more feel? I would say I am a very good machinist as a professional but have no idea where to start as a wood hobbyist, thanks for any input feel free to break my balls.

Do you mean manual wood lathes, or metal lathes?

wood turning is normally done with hand held turning tools. There are no formulas involved. All done by feel and experience.

Yes wood lathes, I know what is involved that is what got me interested. I was just asking because in metal working almost everything can be calculated and formulated into optimal "performance", and am guessing woodwork is more as said "feel and experience"

buy a grizzly lathe about 250 and a set of chisel that's about 60 and you can start your experiments..

on metal lathe also you can turn wood, with profile knives little knobs or coasters..
bowls are requiring some practice already..

a very few youtube video showing how you have to set handrest so chisel wont runaway..

Nearly forgot why I don't post here anymore, but I remember now. I start thread and get info, that it is all feel, and I should buy a Grizzly even though I have 2 wood lathes, and that whoa I can turn wood in a metal cutting lathe, NEVER in a million years would have thought of that. Thanks for zero info guys.

Um, it is all feel. The answer I gave you is the correct one. Sorry you don't like it. You even asked if it was all feel, and then you complain about the answer?

I've been a woodworker for 30 years, and while I don't do a lot of turning, I've done quite a bit. I've also read hundreds of woodworking magazines, and countless articles on woodturning. I've NEVER seen any formulas or charts on chipload or SFM for woodturning.

    Good luck.
