Is it possible to run two machines from one computer and have the machines trigger events in each other's actions?

I was thinking of maybe hooking up two SmoothSteppers and try to run two windows of Mach 3. One window for each machine.

I wanted to automate the machining of some small parts.

One program for the mill, and another for pick, place, and clamp.

Any thoughts?

IIRC you can only run one instance of Mach3 at a time.
A second computer is so cheap that it is almost not worth it anyway.
