    Baldo Sweo drive braking problem

I have a 1995 HT (15 hp Baldor Sweo drive) 4020 with rigid tapping. For the most part the spindle drive works OK. The problem I have is when I do jobs that require the spindle to spin up to 8-10k rpm for a short time and then back down, the portion of the drive that provides the spindle breaking overheats and the spindle doesn't come to a stop correctly. I will stop but after coasting for a bit then jerking to a stop.

I have been told that the sweo drive is "going out" and there's no cheap fix, just a new drive unit. It seems to me that there should be some components that can be replaced instead of the complete drive unit. When it's cool it works just fine.

Has anybody done this or have info on it?

No a Swea drive can be fixed very cheaply (800-1500) by this outfit

We have had good luck with our Fadals milling mostly soft steel and aluminum up to 5 axis. We are always looking for spare parts If you have a broken down Fadal give a shout.

That's awesome news, and more inline with what I was thinking to be possible.

    Thanks again.
