Re: Spindle Not Turning Upon Initial Test - Any Help Appreciated - Reached Rock Botto

    Hi Miller!

    Problem solved!

It was indeed the brushings. took me a while but i finally got them in while touching as well.

They were not fully in contact with the copper blocks hence no power was actually going into the spindle in the end.

    It's very powerful...the spindle lol...

Sometimes, the littlest things can give us the biggest problems...

    ok i am off to bed now - it's almost 2 AM here. If you can help me with the flashing LED next, i'd be forever in your debt ^_________^;;

You should not even have the power on this without the Ground wire, Even an old computer or monitor power cable will do the job, just cut the computer end off, and wire it correctly, this needs to be the first thing you do,

It is for adjusting the Voltage output, so if it is a little low or too high, just turn it until you get to the correct output voltage needed

    Hi Mactec,

Thanks for the heads up and warning. Well taken.

I do have a question, how do I wire? Is there an slot for ground wire? There was the N, L and another little symbol that looks like WIFI signal, is that the ground wire? Also, how do I tell which is which? Is there a color code? I plan to grab a computer cord and strip that.

    Thanks again Mactec.

It's very clear right next to the Natural, Ground is Green/Yellow or just straight Green, Black or Red is Hot ( L ) White is Natural , if you don't no this simple wiring you should have someone
help you that knows more about wiring

Some photos this information is easy to find, when you start a project like this do some study before you start, you only get one chance, electrocution is final

I recommend buying a male 120vac plug and some SO cord and do some google research. It will be a great learning experience and get you familiar with basic outlet wiring.....

Re: Spindle Not Turning Upon Initial Test - Any Help Appreciated - Reached Rock Botto

    Hi Mactec and Miller,

Thanks so much for the knowledge and responses. It is making my life much easier, no longer a struggle.

I went to the electronics store yesterday and purchased a grounded computer cable pre-spliced.

It is white, black and green. White being neutral, black live and green ground.

I was wondering, do I just plug the green ground into the ground symbol slot? The guy at the electronics store said alot and got me confused. He said you can leave the ground unplugged during tests but did not mention plugging it into anything. I know this is probably a redundant idiotic question since I've already plugged the other wires in. I guess I just need someone to tell me, "Yes plug the ground into the wifi looking ground symbol slot".

Also on another note...I sort of need help with wiring right now...

The instructions on the CNC is referring to an older microboard so not exactly the same as what they had shipped. I think it is also a Mach3 board they have in the instructions, not Arduino. I imagine it is not too different of a hook up but if any of you could help walk me through this, it would save me time and electrocution lol (As Mactec puts it).

Basically, now that the spindle has been tested to work, the instruction is telling me to hook the spindle to a spindle controller and than that spindle controller needs to be hooked to the main microboard relay controller who communicates with the computer via usb connection so that the software can control my spindle speed.

    In all, there is the:

    - Spindle
    - Spindle power supply
    - Spindle microboard
    - Main microboard

This is the link to the original instruction, it's near the bottom where they begin to teach us how to hook everything together, but no matter how I look or follow, I am still confused by the images and wordings. The instruction relevant to these hook up begins on Step 029.

ER11 DC Spindle With 36V Power Supply Package - Zen_Toolworks_Wiki

I've also drawn an image to show. If anyone of you can show me the basic wirings, I imagine I can pick it up quickly.

I've also attached some other images of the main board. The main board has a little volt switch (Hard to photograph, you only see the 30, but it's 230) inside it's metal box. It says 230 volts. Is that normal? Currently it functions fine and came pre-assembled.

And this image is the microboard that the spindle is supposed to connect to.

Thanks alot guys, appreciate deeply your time and energy.

This is not something to make fun of, did you not read my post I don't think it could be any clearer what you have to do

Of cause that is where you put the Ground,There are electrical codes that you have to comply with, it is illegal for you to run your system without correct Grounding, where it is needed

    Hi Mactec

Oh no, of course not. I am taking everything you're saying very seriously.

I apologize if I came off as taking things lightly.

It's just because I have so little knowledge with electricity and electronics, that even the slightest success or ignorance makes me hesitant and ponder on what I should do next. I'm just overly cautious hence why I feel my questions at times can sound or be perceived as nonchalant - but trust me, anxiety is running high on my end. To be honest, even having you reply to my noob questions is a blessing to me.

And yes, I did read your post and diagram, but because the guy at the electronics shop left things loose ended, I just needed the double confirmation here.

Point taken, thanks for the mentor, I will put the ground where it belongs now.

I under your eagerness to get this going but we really need to reel you back in a little.

If you are in the US and using 120v AC you must switch that 230 switch to the other setting. It may say 110 or 115 or 120 but that is where it must me.

I also need a better photo of the board you are dealing with. I think from the link posted I have an understanding of what is being done but I can't give you any more information without seeing all the components we are dealing with.

We really really need to slow down and solve/take this project one step at a time. I again understand your eagerness and can appreciate your excitement but you are jumping all over the place in the steps as opposed to addressing one issue at a time then moving on to the next in order.

I am more than happy to help in my free time but we have to go about it the right way to ensure proper SAFE operation.

Even a model of Arduino you are working with may help me assist in the proper wiring.

    Understood Miller.

I am eager, you're right because it's just been so heart breaking and a big head ache as I thought I had bought a kit for noobs. On top of that, the company does not have any sort of technical support...

Hmm ok, give me a couple days to take some good pictures and I will upload them all to my Google Drive.

In terms of the arduino board model number, there is a breakout board covering it on top and I am hesitant to remove that piece as it seems to be soldered on top of another arduino board below. The board on top also says arduino but with the company's name "Zen toolworks" printed on it as well so I suspect it could be a proprietary board combined with arduino?

The only word I can make out for the arduino board below is arduino UNO. Let me try to take some pictures or to see if I can find any sort of serial on the board with a magnifying glass and strong maglites.

I did want to add that as i was playing around with the wirings today, I managed to hook up the spindle directly to the spindle speed control board and have that board hooked up directly to the power supply.

It worked out ok as the knob controlled the RPM nicely.

The power supply says 115V as that was what the instructions originally instructed me to convert it to in case it was at the 230V.

The weird thing is though the breakout board part is at 230V and encased inside a metal cage and this is supposed to be for North america so I am not sure if the company made a mistake when pre-assembling the breakout board portion, setting it mistakenly at 230V.

Luckily though, I haven't blown anything yet with the breakout board hooked up previously to do some simple xyz jotting through universal GRBL.

    i'll be back!

    Hi Miller,

Apologies for the very late reply. i know i was supposed to get you the photos a week after my previous latest reply in this thread and that it's been over a month. I am finally back with some free time as my ceramics has taken up so much of my time in the month of August.

Just to summarise the current status of the CNC machine and also our conversations, if you're still around...

    1. The machine is currently working now, no issues. I had the breakout board set to North America volt (115V-120V). It was originally set to 230V hence the intermittent blinking of the relay LED because not enough juice was getting through. I was just very surprised that for a beginner kit, the company did not mention this part all in their instructions.

    2. The spindle is no longer an issue either, I fixed that. It was a brushing issue internally.

I will upload some pictures to an online FTP and put the link here for you to download and get a better idea of this machine as that was your last request to help out (Much appreciated!).

I am currently hooking up the endstops and making a waste / scrap MDF board to mount onto the CNC bed. After that i plan to do some calibrations and leveling of the X, Y, Z axis.

There is still much to do and if you have any suggestions on how to set up the CNC further for smooth operations, please advise and share!

Ok, my next post, I will include the FTP link of the machine pictures - before end of this week.

Thanks Miller!!! I hope you're still around and that I did not leave anything out from our conversations in this follow-up.

    Hi Miller,

I have it uploaded finally. Had a job out of nowhere come in so had to get that going.

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0s...ew?usp=sharing

There's various shots of the machine, I hope it is clear enough for you to somewhat understand.

I still haven't had the time to connect my end stops so you will see the wires for the end stops are all soldered and ready and just need to be combined with the actual end stops themselves. I used double sided tape for the end stops since I don't really feel confident drilling directly into the machine itself to create holders.

I think I finally have some spare time to get back to this machine and am looking to make the spoil board soon.

Hi people, I've been working on my axiom 6 making windsurfing fins with uccnc and have been doing the logos on the base with my chinese 3020 engraver. The spindle stopped working on the 3020 and had me stumped to the point where I was looking for a replacement rheostat (power controller) until I found a blown fuse on the motherboard. Could it be that simple? Apparently the answer is yes. Now I feel embarassed for looking too hard for a complicated problem. Thank god I'm not too proud to admit I'm an idiot, lol.
